Fear and Greed Report
The first report that can help traders is called Fear and Greed!
Yes — it is actually called the Fear & Greed Index, and the name is official.
The term comes directly from CNN, which publishes and maintains the widely used market sentiment gauge known as the CNN Fear & Greed Index. CNN
What the official name is
The formal, published name is “Fear & Greed Index.”
This is not a nickname or slang — it is the title CNN uses on its investor sentiment dashboard, which tracks how much fear or greed is driving the U.S. stock market at any given time. CNN
Other platforms also reference “Fear & Greed Index” when presenting real time sentiment data, but they are typically pulling from or inspired by CNN’s original model. feargreedtracker.com
Who publishes it
The CNN Business team publishes and updates the index daily.
It is built from seven market indicators, including momentum, market breadth, volatility, and safe haven demand — all combined into a 0–100 score representing extreme fear to extreme greed. CNN
Are there other versions?
Yes — but they are separate products:
- MacroMicro publishes its own “MM Fear & Greed Index,” which is a different model using global stock indices and macro factors. MacroMicro
- Some crypto and multi asset platforms publish their own sentiment indices also labelled “Fear & Greed,” but these are proprietary and not the CNN version. feargreedtracker.com
These alternatives use the same concept but not the same methodology.
Why traders sometimes get confused
Because the phrase “fear and greed” is so intuitive, many traders assume it’s a casual nickname. But in reality:
CNN’s Fear & Greed Index is the original and most widely referenced.
Other platforms borrow the name because it’s become a recognised sentiment category.
The term has become part of trading vocabulary, but it still refers to a specific, branded index unless otherwise stated.
